Here is a beautiful Victorian/Edwardian era carved salmon coral cameo ring set in 14K yellow gold with an old small mine cut diamond at the top. The ring makes me thinK of Medusa in mythology because, though the the cameo does not have hair of snakes, a snake surrounds her in the gold setting! I have tried to show this in the photos. The cameo is set in an oval raised bezel that measures 15mm by 10.5mm The ring itself measures from the top of the diamond to the bottom of the center 25 mm or 1”. The width of the setting is 3/4” with the mouth of the snake extending beyond that down the left hand side of the band another 1/4”. The band itself is somewhat oval in shape which is the way it was made, not bent, I have tried to show that also in the photos. Because it is more oval than round, it is hard to measure on a ring mandrel. I wear a 4 and 1/2 or 5 on my little finger, and it is shown on my little finger. It goes on easily and moves some around some on my finger. It has to be at least a 5, and the back is partially open to the cameo which also provides more room for the finger. The ring weighs 6.25 grams on my jewelry scale, and I have had it professionally cleaned so that the detail on the snake is easily visible. The ring is a beautiful example of the style of jewelry in the Victorian era and early Edwardian period. It has been professionally tested for gold content and is guaranteed to be 14K. Federal law did not require fine jewelry to be marked until the Standard Stamping Act of 1906 which also helps to date this ring prior to that year. If you love coral as the Victorians did, this is a wonderful unusual ring to add to your antique fine jewelry collection!
