A handsome pair of antique bookends depicting the famous Swiss Monument, The Lion of Lucerne. The Monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France. Mark Twain referred to the Lion of Lurcerne as the most Poignant Monument on Earth. The bookends are made of cast iron with a gold painted finish. They stand 4" high and are 6 5/8" wide, the are heavy at over 4 3/4 pounds. The pair is in very good overall condition with no chips or cracks in the cast iron. Both Bookends are in very good overall condition. The set would be perfect for heavy hard cover books.
