A very nice Grand Tour miniature cabinet sculpture depicting German Singer, Hans Sachs (1494-1576). Sachs was a folk singer who belonged to the guild of Master Singers (Meistersingers) in Germany. In 1515, he established his residence at Nürnberg after a period of traveling all over Germany writing and singing songs. He became a shoemaker but continued to compose thousands of poems and songs. His name was immortalized by Richard Wagner (1813 to 1883) who based an opera on him, called Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
This miniature sculpture depicts his memorial in Nürnberg, Germany. The Monument miraculously survived bombing in World War II which destroyed all of the buildings surrounding it. This fine example of made from Terra Cotta or Redware clay, it is signed on the front with his name "H SACHS". Overall dimensions are 6" high x 2 1/2" in diameter at the base. The Sculpture is in good overall condition. He is missing the little pen he held, this same hand is darker than the rest, it could be repaired at the wrist and repainted, see closeup photo. There is a clay shrink inside the pedestal but it does not go through the clay wall to the exterior. The Sculpture is beautifully modeled.
