19thC Wool, Silk, Velvet Embroidered Tea Cozy with Gold Boulle Trim
A lovely antique (circa mid-late 1800s) Tea Cozy. Tea Cozy's were used to keep your teapot warm in old drafty houses. This fine example is made of wool felt and has a lovely hand embroidered silk floss design of a Teapot among scrolls and leaves, the embroidery work is trimmed in Gold Boulle and has a lovely thick braided boulle rope trim on the edges. The silk interior is quilted, is it filled (possibly with down) and the back is silk velvet. Overall dimensions when laying flat are 15" wide x 12 3/4" high with the handle. The Tea Cozy is in good overall condition considering it's age and use. The only thing to note is some loss from moths to the surface flocking of the felt and two tiny moth holes, see photo's. The Tea Cozy would make an excellent addition to a European Textile collection.
