A neat antique plaque depicting Heracles & Cerberus. In Greek Mythology Heracles was considered one of the greatest heroes and a paragon of masculinity. Cerberus, or the "Hound of Hades", is a monstrous multi-headed dog with a snake tail, guards the gates of the underworld, preventing the dead from leaving. Heracles (also spelled Hercules) was given 12 tasks as penance one of which was the capture of Cerberus. The plaque is made of repousse metal with a copper finish and is large at 12" x 16 1/2" including the frame. Heracles & Cerberus are in very good overall condition. The plaque and frame are 2 separated pieces which have small mounting holes on the edges. The plaque would make a great addition to a 19th Century decor or architectural collection.
