A Rare c1843 Map of the United States. The Map is marked "Phelps and Ensign Traveller's Guide Map of the United States. Published by T & E H Ensign in 1843". It depicts the United States as far west as the Rocky Mountains depicting stage, steamboat, canal and railroad routes. Texas is shown as a republic. Thirteen small inset maps detail the vicinity of major cities, with two other insets of upper Maine and the Florida Peninsula. At left are a small double hemisphere world map and comparison charts of the mountains and rivers of the world. There are several historical vignettes including the landing of the pilgrims, the battle at Lexington, the battle at Bunker Hill, Washington's farewell to his army and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the text of the Declaration of Independence, and portraits of ten presidents. The map is a wall version and is paper on linen with wood sticks on the top and bottom, overall dimensions are 46" x 29 1/2" including the rollers. The Map is in very good overall condition for it's age. It has some creases from being rolled, there is a moisture mark on the top left and small scattered losses to the outside edges, see the photographs for a condition report. The back of the linen has some spotting which doesn't effect the paper, it is from being rolled and stored. The Map would make a fine addition to a Cartography or Historical Map collection, it is rare and wonderful.
