A nice antique bronze plaque depicting Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (1837 – 1891). Boulanger's nickname was Général Revanche, he was a French General and Politician who was very popular during the Third Republic, he won a series of elections and was feared to be powerful enough to establish himself as dictator at the peak of his popularity in early 1889. He promoted Revanchism which was an aggressive nationalism that opposed Germany and called for the defeat of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) to be avenged. Boulanger was Minister of War and served in office from January 7, 1886 through May 31, 1887. The plaque is well cast with excellent attention to detail and measures 6 1/2" in diameter. It is in very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. The only thing to note is the left side is just a bit lighter than the right, see photos. The Plaque would make an excellent addition to a French History, Military or Political collection.
