Offered for purchase is a beautiful PH Leonard Austria Floral Motif Handled Serving Plate (Signed/c.1912-1920) hand-painted/decorated in the US or Canada as part of the Arts & Crafts movement. According to Mary Frank Gaston’s “Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain”, P.H. Leonard was a US based importer of Limoges porcelain from 1890’s until World War I.
The design of this beautiful plate is by Martha Wistrand, and may be found in August 1912 edition of Keramic Studio Magazine. Keramic Studio Magazine was a monthly publication for the amateur porcelain/china decorator which provided designs, detailed instructions on porcelain/china decorating, as well as articles and photographs of competitions and displays between various china decorating studios and clubs. The magazine was first published in May 1899 and continued into the late-1920’s. The plate is in great condition... no chips, cracks or repairs, although there are some minor surface scratches and wear from age and use. The plate is 10.75 inches in diameter including the handles. The bottom is marked as indicated in the pictures.
