Offered for purchase is a beautiful Consolidated Glass Martele “Olive” Design Green Wash Plate (c.1920’s). The plate is in excellent condition... no chips, cracks or repairs, although there are some surface scratches and wear from age and use. The plate is approximately 8.25 inches in diameter.
Consolidated Glass is a beautiful, heavy, thick glass from the Consolidated Lamp and Glass, Co. in Coraopolis, PA. The pieces are clear glass with a colored wash applied and then fired to make it adhere to the glass (hence, there may be some worn places in the coloring, and if placed in a modern dishwasher – NOT recommended – the colored wash will come off). According to the website “Glass Lovers Glass Database”, “Consolidated's most popular designs were introduced between 1926 and 1929 and were very diverse. In 1926 Consolidated's Reuben Haley designed an Art Glass Line called Martele (Martele meaning hand forged), imitating the Lalique style. It is said that the Lalique Lovebird design was copied exactly; but all other Consolidated designs were original. Initially, Martele was advertised as Lalique reproductions. Consolidated made Martele glass in blue, crystal, green, pink, white, or custard glass with added fired-on color or a satin finish… From 1932 to 1936, The Great Depression caused Consolidated to close down its production of Art Glass pieces and plants in 1933.”
