There is so much to say about this vintage festoon necklace, first off it is made up of Red Czech Glass, all faceted pieces. This is Victorian with all of the beautiful brass filigree, that has one large faceted piece of prong set glass that is surrounded by 6 bezel round pieces of glass and the 7 dramatically dangling bezel set glass stones that dangle from the beautiful brass chain links. This is a multi chain necklace with 4 swags, that all come down to hold this beautiful Victorian pendant which is the focal point. The pendant alone is 4 3/4 inches from the top of the pendant to the very tip of the longest dangler. The shortest chain strand is 17 inches long. It is a stunning dramatic vintage necklace. It is in good vintage condition.
A festoon necklace, by definition has swags or drapes of chain, beads, or metal findings as part of the design. Other elements such as dangling drops may be a part of the piece, but without the swags a necklace does not qualify as festoon style.
The festoon necklace became popular during the Georgian period with swags of chain or gemstones woven into styles of the day. This carried over into the Victorian era, and some of the more elaborate fashionable necklaces made during this period incorporated jet beads, while others featured Bohemian garnets or Czech glass.
Festoon necklaces were popular during the Edwardian era as well.
