This is a large wooden hand carved seated Buddha sculpture. The sculpture has a gilt polychrome finish and is decorated with jewel toned, mirrored glass tiles. The Buddha is seated with legs crossed in a meditative position. Buddha's left hand is resting in the lap with open palm facing upwards. The right hand is resting on the right knee, pointed towards the ground. This pose is often referred to as Calling the Earth to Witness and is one of the most common poses found in Thai temples. It is the definition of the moment of enlightenment for the Buddha. The eyes of the Buddha are nearly all the way closed and the statue is shaped - more or less- like a triangle which represents stability. This Buddha would be a wonderful piece to add serenity to your household, perfect for a meditation room or yoga studio. It measures approximately 38" tall, 17" at the widest point, and 15" at the deepest point. It is in vintage condition with patina, wear, some breaks as shown in the photos and some loss to the gilt finish as shown in the pictures.
