Berks County Pennsylvania Federal Tall Case Clock with 30 Hour Brass Movement and date Wheel !
Everything about the Case is a Berks County Made Case, and was sold as such by a previous Berks County Dealer, and from a Berks County family owner. The small Flat-Separation between the 2 Cyma Curved arches in the top of the Waist Door is one of a few Berks County Tell-Tale Signs. The Case is a combination of Cherry & Softwood Pine construction in a very Nice warm brownish Cherry Stain, with a full length Heart-Pine backboard. Unusual Original Finials are topped with 3 Canon Balls. Elegant Tympanum with sweeping Federal Broken Arch Top ending in finely carved Pie-Crust Rosettes. Typical Pa. Arched Tombstone Windows on the sides of the Hood. Base is paneled on all 3 sides, and this was done to avoid splitting of single wide Boards. Short and stocky Sheraton style turned feet.
Movement is original to case, with No shims or blocks underneath the Seatboard.
Attribution of Clock Movement Maker ; "John N. Solliday" of Berks County,Pa. while working in Reading,Pa. Although there were many Solliday Family Clock Makers in surrounding Counties. Only John N. Solliday was known to have been working in in the County Seat of Berks County in Reading,Pa. from 1816-1821. Until leaving in 1821 for Tinicum Twp. Pa. The movement retains it's Original Pendulum Stick with Top & Bottom "Pinned Suspension Spring," a strong Solliday Trait on tall case clocks. The rare German Style of "Rack & Snail Alarm & Tailess Escape" is on the Right Side of the movement versus the normal left side.
Movement : 30 Hour Single Weight Driven Movement has been previously Restored with Bronze Bushings as seen in the photos,
and re-oiled on 3-23-20. Both Brass Plates Measure 5 5/8 inches High, and 4 3/8 inches Wide, and 2 1/4 inches Deep.
TWO selectable Heights ; Overall 97 1/2 inches High from base to top of original central Finial. However, there is an optional "Short Center Finial" custom made to accommodate an 8 foot ceiling, which shortens the standing height to 95 1/2 inches.
Historical Foot Note ; There was also an identical case made from "Tiger Maple" sold at auction in 2020,
found in Bernville, Berks County, Pa. which sold for over $7500.oo
