Great Example of Civil War Period "Artillery Glasses" aka "Artillery Goggles" with Clear Glass Lenses ! Circa 1865.
Used to stop any hot sparks from Blinding the Canon operating soldiers. Still has the central Leather String instead of a nose piece, which allowed folding them into an oval tin case. (Missing the Tin case) The surrounding Wire Mesh has some red paint splash around the lenses for reasons unknown. (Red Paint, not blood)
These types of Goggles were known to have been used by Civil War and Later Artillerymen.
However they were all unmarked items, and really can't be proven to have actually been used in the War.
The later Large Goggles with Colored Glass Lenses, were used by Welders for minimal eye protection.
Measurements ; Overall 5 1/2 inches wide, and 1 3/8 inches high.
Weight : 0.3 Ounces.
