Civil War Period Sticking Knife 10 1/2 inches Overall with a 6 inch Blade signed "J. Russell & Co. * Green River Works" !
Known as a "Sticking Knife" aka the "Hunter's Butcher & Skinning Knife", can also be seen in the "Russel & Irwin catalog of 1865 on Plate/ Page 354.
I believe this knife pre-dates the 1865 catalog since it has the "Blade Guard Stop" or Metal Flaps between the Blade & the Grip. Similar example
illustrated in the Center of 5 Knives in a black & white catalog engraving.
From Buffalo Hunters to Butchers, or Civil War self-defense, this was a popular knife.
Crude initials "JPW" scratched into the left side of the wood grip.
The blade & tang are the same piece of steel. The handle is Triple Pinned through the tang. The tang appears tight inside the wood handles.
The knife is in very good condition and measures approx. 10 & 1/2 inches long overall with a 6 inch blade by 1 & 1/8 inches wide at the widest part of the blade, by 5/8 inch thick at the thickest part of the handle. It weighs 4.4 ozs.
You must be over 18 years of age to purchase this knife.
