Rare Ingenious Triangular "Folding Candle Lantern" is Spring Loaded to open when the latching wire is swung away from holding the Bi-fold back & sides together !!! Has 2 Mica Windows and a Flip-open Tab Opening in the Bi-Fold back for Lighting. I believe this is a Child's Miniature size Parade Lantern or could also be used as a Skater's Lantern.
Can be held as a Parade Lantern by the Candle Holder Tube at bottom, or carried by the Hook with it's double chain as a Skater's Lantern.
Striking similarities can be found in an earlier more primitive Patented Parade Torch assigned to ;
"J.H.J. Ronner's Folding Torch Candle Lantern dated March 31,1885 US Patent Number 314,725" This example used a Wooden Stick as a extended candle platform, whereas my example uses the shorter Spring Loaded Candle Tube as the Handle.
Measures : Overall lantern is 7 3/4 inches from Top Plate to the Bottom Brass Candle Tube Cap. Triangular Sides are each 5 3/8 inches High by 3 inches Wide. Candle tube would take a maximum 1/2 inch diameter candle, no longer than 4 inches in length.
Weight : 4.8 Ounces.
Technical Notes : This is the Most Delicate Lantern I have ever Handled. Between the sides flexing, the corners being Spring Loaded, and the Fragile isinglass. (Mica) You definitely want to unscrew the candle tube from the bottom before pushing in the Bi-Fold back of the lantern inward, so that it doesn't swing around and hit the Mica window. Mica is only .003" thick, which is fractionally 3/1000 of an inch.
