Great General Store Cast Iron Tobacco Cutter with defiant Joker, aka "Court Jester Thumbing His Nose" at the public while riding on the Tobacco Leaf Handle !!! If you look closely you can even see a Booze Bottle inside his left coat pocket.
Cutter frame is marked made by ; "Penn Hardware Co. * Reading, Pa. U.S.A."
Historical Notes : Back when tobacco was sold in plugs, looking like a half of a twisted pretzel, most General Stores & Tobacco shops all had a countertop tobacco cutter. This example was made in a smaller iron foundry in Berks County, Pa.
Condition : Near Mint Condition with original Glossy Black Lead Paint with Gold Highlights, with the slightest of chipping at the rubbing Lever Frame and on the base Mounting Plate. Retains the lower original Leaded Seam which was used as a soft cutting board, and is held in place by the Plug Hole. The thinly Nickel Plated Steel Cutter blade is peeling & has a couple of Dings.
