Military Leather Flag Holder with Great "Heart Shaped" Crest for Double Strap Supports Circa 1880 !!! All Leather is Old & Brittle, but still completely intact & unbroken. The Double shoulder straps each have a simple Brass Buckle. I used 0.3 Ounces of Mink Oil to preserve & revitalize both sides of the dried out leather. The Mink Oil is more the consistency of lithium grease and appears white on the Buff leather of the back side.
First Standard Flag Cup looks like it has had a Deeper Extension Socket Professionally added on, with Sewing, Double Copper Rivets and Brass Washers. This would give the Flag Bearer more Comfort during the March, and more Control in heavy Winds.
I found a couple of Scratch Numbers marked on the back side of the straps, one was "63 & 65" and then a "Camp 65" done later with a Black marker. I have found out over the years that a lot of the military equipment was recycled during Peace Time, and re-purposed by Patriotic Organizations after the Wars. I believe this was last used by a "P.O.S.A. Chapter/Camp 65" (Patriotic Order of the Sons of America)
