U.S. Patriotic Eagle & Shield Decorated Bowl & Matching Porcelain Wall Pocket Match Holder with Striker Grooves on Bottom !! Ca. 1890.
Worn Gold Stars on the bottom front of the match holder too.
This is the mark of "Harker Pottery Co." of East Liverpool, Ohio, USA. This Early Mark was their first with "The Bow and Arrow" marks were changed over the years, but always showed an Arrow and usually a Bow too.
prior to this mark Harker & Smith had 10 earlier ones whereas they
have been in production since 1854, and closed in 1972.
(Harker Pottery Co. 1890-1972 / Originally Est. Harker and Smith 1853-1855)
Bowl was produced in America, with factory mark on bottom in a green colored "Semi-Vitreous" spelled out over an illustrated "Bow & Arrow" and below is a monogrammed "H over P" on left of arrow and "Co." on right of arrow.
I attribute this unmarked Match Holder to the same Harker Pottery Co.:
proven by the example in "Harker Pottery" book written
by Bill and Donna Gray where they show this eagle match holder with
marks. Identical Eagle Decorations on Both Pieces showing an Eagle Grasping an American Flag & Shield together in it's Talons. Both have identical 13 Stars on the Shields too. The Bottom Striker is Unglazed and reveals a High Quality of dense Bisque China or Porcelain.
Match Holder is 2 inches High, 2 1/4 inches in diameter, and the flat wall backside is 1 1/2 inches wide. Weighs 3.6 Ounces alone.
Bowl Measures almost 9 1/4 inches in diameter and 1 3/4 inches Deep.
Weighs 1 Pound and 1.3 Ounces alone. Spring loaded wall hanger is included.
In 32 Years of Collecting US Patriotic Eagles, Match Holders, and Flags, I've not seen another Match Holder like this one in person, or in a Ref. Book !
(I have valued the Bowl at $60.00 and the Rare Match Holder at $140.00.)
