Civil War Captain Breveted for Bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg "Thomas Benton Reed" 140 Piece collection !

Highlights Contain 2 War Time Commissions signed by President Andrew Johnson , 3 Signed by Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin, Secretaries of War Schofield and Edwin Stanton! His first Non-Com was signed By Major George Dare whom later was Killed in Action at the Battle of the Wilderness !

4 Binders holding the 130 documents 1861 to 1880's !

A Walnut Framed 1879 Presidential Certificate Breveting him Lieutenant Colonel in the "Military Order of the Loyal Legion" signed by acting President Rutherford B. Hayes, who was also wounded 5 times in the civil war and survived before becoming President !

His Family History going back to the late 1700's is also included in his Large Leather bound Bible. His grandfather was the founder of Reedsville,Pa. and his Great Grandfather was General McAlevey of McAlevey's Indian Fort in Huntington County Pa. During the French & Indian War! His mother was also related to The wife of John Harris whom operated Harris's Ferry and named as the Founder of Harrisburg,Pa. which is the present day Capital City of Pa.

The Captain's Red Officer's Sash is also included from his 10 year Military Career !

He first Joined the 36th Pa. Infantry Company "D" which was absorbed into the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves from Lewistown, Huntington County,Pa. in 1861.
Commissioned Sargent on Nov.1st,1861 at Camp Pierpont.

He then rose in the ranks to 2nd Lieutenant and 1st Lieutenant and finally Breveted a Captain for Bravery at the "Battle of Gettysburg" and given charge of the same Company "D" in the regiment. His 5th Pa. Reserve Regiment assisted the 83rd Pa. Infantry with securing Little Round-Top for the New York artillery to move up after fighting off Three lines of Rebel Charges between the Little and Big Round-Tops ! This also then made it possible for the 20th Maine to occupy the End of the Fish Hook !

After his first 3 year term expiration he was authorized to Muster another Company of Soldiers for the new 205th Pa. Infantry Company "D" on Aug.2nd,1864 which he served in until the expiration and end of the War in 1865 !
His List of Equipage Returns are also included in the group from Jan.1st,1865 while at Petersburg,Va.

There is One Binder full of his wartime Military correspondences & Orders and there are 3 Binders full of post war activities including his Pension Board documents with 2 George Meade signatures !
Later Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant by President U.S. Grant into the 26th Cavalry stationed in Texas. Then petitioned and received a military pension from the pension board in Philadelphia due to ill health.

His Civil service Jobs document him as a Revenue Agent in Florida.
Note: He was also Commissioned a Train Policeman for the East Broad Top Mountain Railroad in Huntington,Pa.
He died as a retired Captain in Carlisle,Pa. and was Deservedly Buried at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
