Beautiful lacquer qalamdan (pen box) made in the Northern Kashmir region of India, c.1850, typical of those made for the European market in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of papier mache, ground and finely painted in polychrome and finished in numerous layers of varnish. It appears to be signed in Urdu and has additional Urdu script throughout. When closed, the qalamdan measures approximately 8.5” in length and approximately 1.5” in width and height.
The condition is excellent, with minimal age related wear, and without damage. The colors remain vibrant, and the inner box fits securely but slides in and out without problems.
