This is an Italian Murano art glass casket box. The glass is opaline. The date is the middle of the 20th century, circa 1950.
The box is 4 5/8” high, 7 ¼” long, and 4 3/8” from front-to-back. The weight is about 5 pounds.
The box is rectangular. The edges are fitted with gleaming brass. There are four paw feet.
The glass is green, and in some light the glass appears more yellow.
The glass has oval and circular indentations around the sides and on the top, and which have black or white enamel beading.
The sides and top have bands of gold gilding, which I understand to be as high as 22k. There are beautiful hand enameled pink roses and other flowers. There is white beading and black scrolls.
On the back side of the box, along the lower edge, hand enameled are the words “Decorato A Mano Murano”, which translates to Decorated By Hand in Murano.
This piece is visually stunning, and it would make an excellent wedding or anniversary gift. The function was most likely intended for use as a jewelry casket box.
There is minimal wear, only that which is consistent with age and gracious handling. There are no chips, nicks, cracks or tarnishing.
