This is a Japanese Nippon hard paste porcelain mug. The date is circa 1910.
The mug is 4 5/8” high and 3 ¾” wide at the bottom.
The front of the mug shows the head of a hand painted horse in a reserve surrounded by raised yellow enamel. The reserve is glazed. The rest of the mug is painted with ground colors of brown and green-gray, with designs in raised enamel. The back of the mug has a blue flower in raised enameled with blue leaves. The handle has raised enamel dots and lines.
The rim and edges are enameled in black.
There is very little wear. There is some scuff wear to the bottom edge. The bottom underside is glazed, and there is a line in the glaze in the shape of an irregular “Y.” There are no chips, nicks, cracks or other crazing.
This is an original Nippon mug.
The green mark is M in the wreath with Hand Painted above and Nippon below.
