This is a French Haviland & Co Limoges 8 5/8” cobalt Feu de Four plate, hard paste porcelain, from the 19th century, circa 1883 to 1885.

The plate is signed by the factory artist A. Armand. I have four plates for sale in my shop; they are a series of flowers designed by this artist, therefore each plate is different with a different flower, and each plate is signed on the front.

This plate is noted on the back as being the flower Nenuphar, which means Water Lily.

Each plate is done in cobalt and fired with the Feu de Four process. The rims are gilded in heavy raised gold and the edges have more gold brushed on.

The underside foot rim has a gold band. The green underglaze mark is Haviland France. The blue overglaze factory decorating mark is Haviland & Co Limoges “Feu de Four.” Most of these pieces were produced in the years of 1883 to 1885.

The cobalt Feu de Four is quite rare and scarce. You can view another piece in the book by Nora Travis “The Evolution of Haviland China Design”, page 98, Figure 300.

The artist’s signature is below the water lily on the front of the plate.

There is a round circle line in the glaze that corresponds with the plate foot on the underside of the plate. The photos do not show this line, not even a close-up as I tried, but do note that it is there. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks or crazing.
