This is a hand painted Japanese Satsuma dessert tea set for five. The date is circa 1900 to 1930. It is a soft paste porcelain, a cream buff color that is identified with high quality Satsuma ware, therefore the glaze on each piece has crazing, or what is terms a crackle glaze.
There is a teapot, sugar, creamer, five cups and saucers and five dessert plates.
The teapot is 4 ¼” by 7 ¼”. The sugar pot is 3 ¼” by 5 ½”. The creamer has a lid and it is 3” by 4 ¼”. The dessert plates are 6 ½”. The saucers are 5 ¼”. The cups are 1 7/8” by 3”.
Each piece is hand painted. There are no transfer patterns on this set. The glaze is a shaded dark pink going to a bisque color. The chrysanthemum flowers look somewhat like daisies, pink and white with yellow middles. There are leaves in two different shades of green and stems. The hand painting is delicately outlined in gold. These flowers are used to decorate a lot of Satsuma tea ware.
The edges of each piece have professionally applied gold trim, meaning a gilder hand painted the gold and worked in a geometric design with black enamel.
The set is quite labor intensive.
The backs of the teapot, sugar and creamer show hand painted grassy leaves with a tulip type of flower.
The crazing is dark in the interiors of the pots and on the outside of the teapot.
The spouts, handles and finials are covered in gold.
The cups have some pinprick nicks in the gold trim that do not show in a photo as they are so tiny. There are no other nicks, chips or cracks. There is a little bit of wear to the gold trim.
Each piece has two letters in gold on the bottom.
