This is a pair of Japanese Satsuma mantel vases. Satsuma is always hand painted and hand enameled. The date is circa 1900.

The vases are 6” high and 2 ¾” wide,

The material is a pottery, or soft paste porcelain, a cream color, and with a tight crackle glaze.

The vases have a matching landscape scene that circles each vase. There are two people who walked over a foot bridge and are standing on a promontory looking out over the water to a craggy island with a house perched up high. The question is – the foot bridge goes from one small island to another small island, with no houses on either island, so why is there a bridge and how did this couple get there, with no boat visible.

A lot of the hand painting is done in gold, with the use of black, green and red. There are two bands at the top near the mouth with the geometric designs that the Satsuma decorators liked to use. There are gold bands at the top and the foot.

One vase shows a few tiny pieces of color missing, or perhaps it is intentional because the two spots are smooth to the touch. One vase has a black streak under the glaze, near the top. There are no chips, nicks or cracks. The foot rest shows estate grime due to age.

The signature is three Japanese characters hand painted in gold over a black rectangle that is outlined in gold. I am told this signature belongs to the Kinkozan studio, the Awata-Kyoto School, but I don’t know for certain.

I have more Satsuma in my shop. Just do a search within my shop for Satsuma.
