This is an instrument for land surveying in its own custom box, made by the David White Co between 1895 and 1912. The instrument is called a level-transit combination. It is an antique, and sold as an antique, as I have no idea if it works or not.
The box is hand made for the instrument. It contains the leveler, two boxes of compasses, and a faded and torn instruction manual. An original tag still dangles on the instrument.
It is meant to go on a tripod. There is no tripod in this listing.
The box has wear, some cracks in the wood, fading to the varnish, and pantina on the metal.
The compass boxes are intact; however, the compasses look old and one doesn’t appear to be working (to my untrained eye.)
The leveler is dusty and everything seems to be there.
The instruction manual is missing the back cover. There are 14 numbered pages of instructions and information, including a listing of the parts.
The David White Co is still in business today.
The box with the instrument weighs a little over 8 pounds
