This is a German jasperware teapot. The maker is Schafer and Vater, one of the Rudolstadt companies. The date is circa 1896.

The material is stoneware, or a pottery.

The pot is 5” high to the top of the finial, and 7 ½” wide from spout-to-handle.

The outside is colored pink with a green tinge and it is not glazed. The inside is glazed pink.

The teapot is small, a demitasse size, and intended to serve only 1-2 people. Schafer and Vater produced this jasperware in a set, and at the minimum there was also a sugar and a creamer. The sugar is small and gets confused by sellers as a type of box intended for the dresser, but when there are two handles it is generally a sugar bowl, no matter how tiny it is. I have never seen cups and saucers, so I don’t know if they were produced also.

On the sides there is a face in cameo relief, white against green, and also stoneware. The cameo faces are inset in an oval and the surrounding ridge is trimmed in gold. There are four buttons around each cameo that appear to be added to the blank and glazed in pink or blue, to simulate a semi-precious stone. More of these buttons are on the lid and smaller ones on the handle and spout.

I don’t know if the green tinge on the stoneware is intentional by the maker, or if the pot needs a special type of expert cleaning. I leave it to the buyer to make that determination.

The interior glaze is crazed, which is normal for pottery. There are no chips, nicks or cracks. The gold trim shows some wear. The underside ridge of the lid, the part that inserts into the mouth of the pot, has a flake that can be felt with the fingers.

The impressed maker’s mark is a crown over a star shape containing the letter R.
