This is a beautiful hard paste porcelain cider mug. The decorator is Jaeger & Co in Bavaria, Germany. The mug has artist’s initials next to the blue overglaze decorating mark. The date is the first part of the 20th century, circa 1910.

The mug is 5 5/8” high and 3” wide at the bottom. The blank looks exactly like a Limoges blank, so it is possible that the Jaeger artist decorated a French blank, or else the maker copied a Limoges blank exactly.

The dragon handle is fantastic. The dragon’s head stretches out to the left of the handle, with a long red tongue flicking out. The dragon grips the side of the mug with two front and two back splayed out feet, with the tail winding along the mug to the lower right of the handle. The handle has raised bumps in the porcelain to depict scales. The artist colored the handle green, and blushed the underside an orange color to depict the belly. There is an eye hand painted in black and white, and black and white for the teeth; this is interesting, and I don’t mean to get too technical, but I thought dragons are of the serpent family, and therefore no teeth.

The artist painted clusters of ripe apples on the front and back of the mug, along with green leaves. The ground is green.

I don’t think the rim was gold trimmed. The ground goes to the rim, and drips over a bit, and there is no gold.

There are no chips, cracks or crazing.

The blue overglaze decorating mark is one of the crossed lines with leaves at the top and the letters J&C. There is a green underglaze word I can’t read that is not in English. The artist’s initials are overglaze and are CS.
