This is a Bohemian Czech art glass vase. The maker is Harrach. The date is circa 1890.

The vase is 9 ¾” high and 4 ¾” wide.

The glass is white opal or opaline. A process was used by the glassmaker to color the outside of the glass, which is pink at the bottom, a pale green-to-yellow in the middle, and a pale blue towards the top; the color transitions are difficult to see in the photos.

There is a scene hand enameled or hand painted on the outside against the pale colors. There is a long neck water bird, a heron I believe, with its neck stretched down and nibbling off the ground, and the bird is standing next to the water. To the left and right of the bird are green grasses along with leaves on long stems painted in raised gold enamel. The gold decoration extends around the vase. The top and bottom parts of the vase are colored in a dark brown with splashes of gold.

There are flakes of lost brown color along the mouth edge and the bottom edge. There is a line in the outside coloring that is not in the glass but is part of the original coloring process, difficult to see in the photos, and it can’t be felt with the fingers, but it shows with a close-up personal inspection. Look at the bird carefully. One side of the neck is outlined in raised white enamel, and it might appear like a loss of color, but it is how the bird was painted. The left wing looks like a color loss too, but it is an outline in white raised enamel.

The vase has numbers and an illegible signature on the bottom underside. The first number is 976/3, which is a production form number used by Harrach. The second number looks like H489. The signature is worn. The bottom is flat with no pontil and mostly pink in color. The rim is round.

There are no chips, nicks or cracks.
