An Early Vintage Wedgwood Royal Commemorative Art Deco circular Pottery beaker of the 1937 Coronation of King George V1and Queen Elizabeth 1 shown along with their daughters Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Transfer printed in blue and pink on a creamware glazed ground having the French motto ‘Dieu Et Mon Droit’ [ translated as ‘God and my Rights’ - A motto of the British Monarch which refers to the divine right of the Monarch to Govern ], all set in blue and black ribbon, and on the reverse a record showing that this example is one of a group ordered by Portsmouth City Council and its Lord Mayor, F.J.Spickernell, accompanied by Portsmouth’s Coat of Arms and motto ‘Heavens light our Guide’ which was incorporated into the Coat of Arms in 1929. It is the same motto used by the Star of India and was used on Indian Troop Ships that regularly traveled between Portsmouth and the East.
Marked on Base : A Standard Factory transfer printed triangular mark introduced in 1936. A yellow unicorn set against a blue ground over a white triangular segment of white incl. the words ‘Wedgwood & Co. Ltd., England‘. A decorators mark of a hand painted ‘W’ drawn overglaze to LHS of Triangular mark.
