Antique, oval raised and flat top and bottom surface with hinged Brass Miner’s / workman’s twist snuff or tobacco box having primitive punched decorations of consecutive punched ‘S’..esses. encircling and enclosing the following punched text, E.WRING BEDMINSTER 1908 BRISTOL, [ In the English County of Somerset ]. IT measures, 65mm long x 40mm wide x 23mm deep and weighing 66.2gms. this boxes decorations is somewhat primitive and naive in character
The majority of these brass twist / snuff boxes were made for the predominantly male mining workforce who were heavy users of the Twist Tobacco product whilst working underground in a hot, close and clammy, smelly, coal dust ridden atmosphere. Other working groups did however use them as well.
It is made a good strong gauge of sheet brass, capable of many years of pocket and handling wear. Some of these surviving boxes do clearly show much wear use. This box has a good strong working hinge and opens and shuts with a precise movement, shutting with a positive mid – tone ‘’snap’’. Which is a clear indication of its little, if any use. It’s in mint condition. A great collector’s item.
In all , a very nice strong working man’s brass box in excellent mint condition. It’s now 106 years old !!
