This charming 19th C Staffordshire figure of a Spaniel Dog has an attractive face and body line, and is typical of this kind of Victorian Staffordshire Dog, although, in my opinion, this model, is in particular, one of the best shapes of its kind in this category. I prefer this particular type of modelling. In this instance its black decorative features are painted by hand in a matt black finish, which has partly pooled and bubbled during the firing process in the kiln. I find this paint and firing process error being a decorative addition to its charming attractive modelling, and thus placing it at the very beginning in the classification of Primitive 19th Century Art. This a genuine opinion. Some may disagree and some may agree with me. What is most important about any innate man made Antique pottery object, is simply, whether you like it or not ! That's why I am listing it on Ruby Lane, despite its manufacturing faults, as I see it, it has its place in the collecting world, and thus see it falling into a particular category of collecting interest, and nothing else.
