I love this simple, yet very charming, Antique Catholic Pendent that I came across recently whilst doing a Welsh Estate, part clearance. It depicts young Jesus being held in the arms of Joseph, oneside, and his 'earth' mother Mary, shown up in the heavenly clouds, being spiritually represented as significant religious figurehead.
This item was quite dirty, and I dismantled it carefully for a 'spring clean', before photographing it. I did wonder, whilst cleaning it very caringly, off course, if it had ever been cleaned before. Having successfully taken it apart, and put it back together again, I can say what components it is made of.
The circular brass 'bobble' rimmed frame opens apart at its apex where it is threaded on the exterior of its two ends, over which a single ball shaped fixing is threaded internally, designed to screw down onto the two frame ends, and thus, bring the join of the two frame ends firmly together.
When opened the bobble frame can be very gently forced apart at its apex, and thus forced to release its inner components consisting of three pieces of circular card. One plain piece, and being set in-between the two outer pieces which have been black ink printed with one, the image of Joseph holding Jesus, and the other of a cloaked and crowned Mary. Joseph's garment shows signs of being heightened originally with a now slightly faded pale blue, tinted watercolour. These two printed pieces are covered with a protective layer of what looks very much like a translucent plastic finish. Maybe a celluloid ?
I think the whole thing being cheap to make at the time. But, as I have found like so many other things I've come across during my long career as a Professional Antique Dealer that some of those things that were originally cheap to make have seemed, rather charmingly, to have become categorised as naive, and or, primitive art forms, and mainly to the middle classes of the world today, and have thus become so endeared and sought after by many followers and collectors of these categories of Antique Art forms, so much so, that some of them draw a financial interest that far, far outweighs their original cost to produce, and at an extreme disproportion in those costs too. Philosophically this scenario is understandably a difficult one for many to try to understand, or even get their mind around. Others seem to take to it like duck to water. It took me sometime to get the drift of thought associated with these art forms, but once I did after watching for many years how others responded to it, I gradually changed and since become a great lover and admirer of such things.
Well, I have gone on a bit, but I believe it to be an extremely interesting subject.
