This piece of Davenport Earthenware pottery has a hard to see impressed anchor mark with uppercase lettering and when held at the right angel you can make out the numbers 4 and 1 on either side of the anchor dating this little pitcher 1841! This little piece of history also has a stamp for Davenport and another that reads "MANUFACTURED FOR HENDERSON & GAINES 45 CANAL ST NEW ORLEANS" which further authenticates the dates! Please note that the red hue on photos is from the background! There is no red to this piece!
This lovely 8-sided pitcher has a black vein design with a stylized snake handle. It stands 4 1/8 inches tall and has a small chip on the inside rim and a tiny flake on the tip of the spout - Excellent condition for an antique pitcher! In 1840 New Orleans was considered the wealthiest city in the United States. One can imagine the store on 45 canal street that imported and sold this little pitcher and the travels it survived these 170+ years!!
