Unique Art Deco style on this vintage Community Plate wood silverware storage case. Rectangular mahogany wood finish top and sides with black round overs on the top and bottom side edges. The top surface of the case has a book matched veneer design, very beautiful! Black painted wood handle on the front. Interior has a midnight blue anti-tarnish lining. The blue material in the lid, on the joint and on the divider bar has a velveteen feel while the material in the bottom is more of a shiny slippery fabric.
An interesting detail: In the bottom of the box where the silverware is stored, the back has been made to be a little higher than the rest of the floor in order to better show off the silverware handles (Silverware used to be advertised with the handle end up and the service ends down).
Box will hold a service for 12. There are 12 double sets of loops in the lid for holding knives along with 1 Extra larger loop between the knives for a serving piece. There are 11 slots in the main section of the box for holding the rest of the pieces (not counting the two end slots that could also be used for a serving piece on its side). This is a longer than average sized box!
Measures 19-1/2" x 11-5/8" (including the handle) x 4-1/8" tall. Interior has two stickers. One is the Community Plate sticker; the other is the Oneida Ltd. Good Housekeeping Institute Anti-Tarnish sticker.
Box is in very good condition overall! There are some scratches on the top but they have been minimized with a fresh polish and wax. Finish is very glossy and overall appearance looks nice on the table. There are some wispy brush strokes of a light colored paint on the right front corner area and a little on the wooden handle. Interior is in very good condition, just one small snag in the shiny material in the bottom of the box, maybe some light wear between a couple of the loops in the lid. Hinges work well, box seals nicely and there are no bad odors. Overall, a lovely box from the Art Deco era.
