We present this absolutely Stunning and Significant Antique bronze work after the original by Pierre Jules Mene....It is a rare find indeed. One of the few models of this work by Mene cast at the foundry of Ferdinard Barbedienne and stamped along the base. It was almost certainly cast after his death, 1875 - 1890.
After his death in 1871 rights to his models were purchased by Suisse Freers, the foundry that executed a great number of his pieces in the 19th century. Barbedienne models are more difficult to find , but they are worth the wait as the quality of the casting is superb. The details and patina of this model has been captured with perfection and full rich patina.
PIERRE- JULES MENE was born in Paris 1810, He was the most prolific and successful animalier of his day. A sculpture of incredible success , he was renown during his lifetime, for Mene's work captures the gentleness of nature.
Measurements: 9 3/4" length x 6 3/4 " height x 4 1/2 " depth .
Condition: Excellent, .... wonderful rich rubbed patina, superb realism demonstrates the artist's love of dogs and his marvelous ability to portray them in the correct proportions. Every element is present, the Whippet with it's gracefully sculpted head long and lean and it's tail tucked and the King Charles Spaniel with it's rounded head, well proportion body, long lush coat and pushed in snout, both Amazingly Alive and Alert.
