A heart stopping estate sale find is an experience that some collectors have had when they look on the table there and see Juliana jewelry shining through among the other baubles. When that happens you can be sure nobody else saw it before you. Otherwise, it would already be gone! This Delizza and Elster Juliana designer set includes a pendant necklace, brooch pin, bracelet and earrings that feature hand painted pink “sugar” polka dots on black beads and dazzling prong set orange, jonquil, aurora borealis and marquis rhinestones. The black beads also have a charming little blue leaf like design.
On close inspection the “sugar” does look exactly like course sugar granules set into the paint. The pieces have many identifying features in the construction and elements used for Juliana jewelry. These were not originally signed as Juliana on the jewelry but instead came with a foil paper identification tag and so many pieces found are missing it. All pieces are in excellent condition.
Brooch pin – This measures 1.75 inches wide. From the back view the construction includes an open work design with a built in pin assembly. The center chaton has a ruffled outer perimeter. There is puddled solder in various spots and multiple “figure eight” solder formations around the outside.
Pendant Necklace– The tear drop shaped pendant measures 2.0 inches long and also has an open work design. From the back view again is seen the ruffled outer perimeter for the polka dot bead at top which is surrounded with aurora borealis chatons from the front view. The pin is built in and the bail is soldered in above the pin assembly. There are numerous solder puddles and a few “figure eight” solder patterns. The neck chain for the pendant is 24.0 inches long. It appears to be original compared to other Juliana link style neck chains I have seen.
Bracelet – It measures 7.5 inches long and is 0.75 inch wide. This bracelet has a five link construction in rectangular shapes. The link connectors are embossed with a beaded stripe design. But, the fold over clasp part has a double line arrow stripe design instead. Both patterns were used for Juliana bracelets. The bracelet end clasp is additionally decorated with small paste set orange rhinestones. The bracelet safety chain was missing and a new one has been added (pictured).
Clip earrings – They are 1 1/8 inches long. A single polka dot bead is surrounded with prong set aurora borealis rhinestones, more jonquil and orange rhinestones. The floret shape around the polka dot bead from the back view shows again the ruffle around it and some puddled solder. The clip is the three holed type with a round scalloped top. The clips function perfectly.
The metal plating is all gold tone.
There are examples of Juliana polka dot sugar bead jewelry in the 2008 Shiffer’s collector’s book entitled “The Art of Juliana Jewelry” by Katerina Musetti on pages 44, 47, 86, 121 and 168. It is rare to find a matching set of Juliana jewelry all in one place especially also in great condition.
