A very RARE doll -- 18" E.I. Horsman & Co. Baby Buttercup from the early 1930's, and produced for only ONE year. She is highlighted in Ursula Mertz's book of "Collectors Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls".
Baby Buttercup is in near MINT condition. I believe this is the largest of the dolls produced and is about 18" tall (sitting 14" with her cute drawn up "baby" legs). She has a composition flange head, full arms and bent baby legs on a cloth body with a non-waking crier inside. She is jointed at the shoulders and hips. Buttercup has PERFECT molded painted blonde hair, brown glassine eyes, and an open mouth. Her body and head are in excellent condition, NO CRAZING AT ALL -- with smooth, even toned composition. Her only slight imperfections are a tiny chip under one foot, and a 1/8" diameter 'pop' in the paint on her left lower arm that was made when she was 'born' at the factory; I have sealed the small indent it made, for which she is grateful after all these years :-)
She is marked on the back of the neck "H. c Co.". Her brown eyes are perfect, opening and closing as they should. Like most of the dolls from this long ago era, here eyes were blown when I received her... the irises have been professionally restored giving her little soul a new life. All painted features are clearly defined and intact with just enough blush to compliment her creamy 'porcelain-like' complexion.
Note: There are NO RUBS to her lovely face; any perceived in my photos are flashback from my camera and the lighting in the room when taken.
She comes in her ORIGINAL Effanbee FACTORY GOWN, SLIP, and one-piece flannel DIAPER and VEST (undershirt). Her GORGEOUS dress is made of BUTTER CUP YELLOW ORGANDY with pink satin ribbon trim, and French val lace on a triple-brim bonnet. Her LONG GOWN is beautifully embellished with embroidered flowers and several rows of narrow pin tucks near the hem. The slip and underwear are made of creamy white flannel and have NEVER BEEN REMOVED since her 'birth' so many decades ago now... and the slip has pink embroidered accents at the hem, neck and sleeve openings. Long ago Buttercup carelessly lost her shoes and socks, and I have given her a nice pair of white knit booties with yellow satin ribbons to complete her lovely outfit... she feels better about the lost shoes now.
All clothing is in excellent condition and fits her perfectly. The fabric is immaculately clean with no wear -- CRISP and like NEW.
Baby Buttercup has been thoroughly cleaned -- She has beautiful coloring, with sweet light blushed cheeks. The historical value and short production run lend this little cutie all the desirable characteristics of a highly collectible doll. Truly a RARE find for any collector of Horsman or composition dolls.
