A 19th Century Country French Provencal boite à sel, or salt box, in the form of an armoire. Made of walnut with a hinged lid and a small drawer with brass knob. This was used in the South of France for storing salt and would have been hung on the kitchen wall. Circa 1840-1860. 17"H x 12.25"W x 7.25"D. We have several similar kitchen items including boites à sel (salt boxes), farinieres (flour boxes) and porte couteaux (knife holders). These small boxes were often given as wedding gifts.
