Rare American Revolution, 1775-1783 1780 bond to keep “ordinary” (Boarding House) in Halifax County, VA. (No unlawful gaming or more tippling than necessary on the Sabbath) Thomas Tuck to future President Thomas Jefferson as Governor.
Fascinating legal document from a Halifax, Virginia issued during the Revolutionary War to encourage patrons not to over indulge alcohol on the Sabbath. Naturally it was an order literally impossible to enforce. And comical to suggest one should consume only what is required on an individual basis. I’m certain Thomas Jefferson was wringing his hands on enforcing this order! 6 x 8 ½ inches and displayed in a fine wood & glass presentation plaque.
