A fascinating four page hand written letter from a self-proclaimed British subject now living in Canada offering their views on the American Civil War and England’s tedious position concerning her involvement in the war and support for the south which centers on the cotton industry and the Union blockade. The letter is strictly focused on the war offering no typical salutations concerning the weather,health or good wishes. The letter is passionately written to the receiver who appears to be living in the states.

*England selling her principals for cotton no!... As soon as you can condemn her for that-you will find she will continue to send armed forces to break the blockade, armed forces to aid the south.
*The union cause….have been from the first simple, selfish reason that if America continued to grow and increase in strength wealth and population for years to come that the balance of power would soon be lost and America would soon assume the form of dictator to the rest of the world, which would not be all agreeable.

*Although I am a British subject I have always regarded your country’s cause with all the good feelings possible, which yet remaining to my countries Queen.
