Rare original c.1890's Advertising Poster for the Charles Leonard Hardware Store in Petersburg,Virginia.
This poster likely was displayed in the store itself. The poster is housed in its frame with slag board backing and dimpled glass. I have replaced the wire hanger for security purposes.
Charles Leonard (1826-1916) came to Petersburg, VA from London in 1830. In 1840 he started learning the gun trade, but eventually he went into the hardware business in 1845. His store was located on Old Street. Around the beginning of the Civil War Leonard’s hardware store was on Sycamore Street. The address for his business at that time was 30 South Sycamore Street.
The last newspaper clip I can find that references Charles Leonard Hardware Company as still being in business is dated May 11, 1946. It gives the store’s address as 20-24 West Bank Street.
16' X 20 inches w/frame.
I have included recent photos of this building as it is seen today. You can see by looking at the side of the building where the original roof line was located before renovation in 1919. The poster shows how this building appeared before that renovation. The marble platform where the Lion stood is still there only positioned outward.
