For your consideration I am offering an early and very important Indenture from the historic & important families of Van Schaick and TenBroeck of Albany, New York. The large vellum or heavy rag document (16 x 28) is dated October 12th 1768 and begins by stating this is between Anthony Van Schaick and his wife Christiana Van Schaick and Goose (Gosen)Van Schaik of the county of Albany of New York.
From what I gather this Indenture concerns a very large property transfer or purchase for much of the county and city of Albany, New York. The document details large holdings of land parcels & lots by numbers. One has to believe this Indenture was a little more than anyone expected between families given the sheer size of the land involved, conditions and notations to that degree.
I must admit I was unable to completely articulate all the legal jargon & language applied in this document. My wife did all the Sherlock Holmes investigation of this indenture with a magnifier and flash light. What she notated was several mysteries that caught our attention. One in particular is a rather strong notation that appears to be a soul searching afterthought after the agreement that reads in part:
"They have met me in the day of success and I have learned by the perfected report by....mortal".
This particular inscription is shown in my images provided in this listing.
Another mystery is the name of (Half Moon) in the document. Is this name referring to an Indian or the Half Moon Dutch Vessel that sailed the Hudson River in the 17th century?
Other parties noted in the document: Anna TenBroeck wife of ..... Von TenBroeck of the county of Albany of the other part where as the aide of the parties is present and jointly west side of the Hudson River. The name of Maria Von Schaick is also noted in the indenture.
