An early pre-Civil War Southern diary/ book of affirmations belonging to one Francina Catherine Bryan of Buffalo,North Carolina. What later became Buffalo City and is now Ghost Town. According to limited records Francina was born in 1842 and later married L.C.Jones of Virginia a Confederate soldier. The book contains roughly 22 letters of affection to Miss Francina by her friends and family from the years 1857 through 1860. There are two inscriptions by her cousin Fannie Monroe in January of 1867.

I would assume the war had something to do with the lack of inscriptions from 1861-65.

Here is a list of the names included in this book: J.S.Seawell, Annie McAllister 1858, Mary McLean,Lizzie December 21 1858,W.Temple Jones two separate inscriptions, A.E.Campbell May 28th 1858,Elizabeth Wicker February 28th 1858,Deep River Chatham,N.C. signed W.J.B. February 17th 1858, November 8th signed "Dank",D.O.R. December 22 1858, Dalrymaple? 1860,M.B.Monroe January 1867, W.H.Jr. February 9th 1859,Bural Grove N.C. 1860 Lizzie, Cousin Fanny Monroe January 24th 1867, X.J.L., February 9th 1859 McIver, September 15th 1860 Your Cousin M.L.,"Nousverrons," County DR M February 14th 1858,Jodie Monroe, McIntyre May 22nd 1857 and finally a notation signed; "Your Deep River Farewell Friend".

The calligraphy by her friends and family in this book is indeed an art in itself.

The book contains a number of botanical hand-colored prints and measures 7' ½ x 10 inches, typical foxing and stains consistent with age; in good condition.
