I have owned this adorable toy bear for decades in my personal collection and I cannot count how many times someone has asked me if it was once a “real bear.” As lifelike this bear appears I have never, ever seen or heard of a bear that stands 7’ inches and measures one-foot in length. Indeed this bear is made of real bear fur and the detail is incredible. I would date this toy Civil War period according the Provenance. The lady I bought it from was named Tommy Hunter and her husband was Jack Hunter who wrote the best-selling book the Red Baron and was a World War 2 American spy. I was good friends with both of them when they lived here in St. Augustine and Jack had this Bear in his personal collection. I finally convinced him to trade it for an old pistol he coveted I owned. The Bear belonged to his grandfather as child and was a gift of a western fur trader. I believe it was completely hand-made down to every detail including the paws. You will not find an equal anywhere.
