These vintage Homco/Burwood wall hanging clowns are definitely clowning around. They are from the 1970’s. Made of syroco plastic resin material they stand 11 ¼ inches tall. One is 8 ¾ inches across and the other is 7 ½ inches across. In a classic clown pantamine one clown is pointing at the other clown laughing at what he sees. The other clown is losing his pants. The faces are the classic white faces with star eyes. Each piece has a lot of detail and bright colors of orange, green, yellow and black.
The back does not have a year or number but has an imprint of their trademark of a peaked roof with a chimney with either smoke or an antenna above it. The mark also has the word HOMCO in capital letters under the roof. Each piece has a metal hanger on the top inside. These clowns would be nice in a child’s room.
Homco was started by a woman named Mary Crowley who wanted to expand her income. She started the business using Avon and Tupperware as an example and set it up as a direct sale business in 1957. She enlisted her first interested female customers as displayers in the business and later sales women. Using parties at homes she built the business up. It closed it’s doors in 2008.
