This 1950’s elegant Northington forest green serving dish is really attractive with its tigertail metal sleeve.
It has a flat 7 ½ inch cover with a short ¾ inch handle. Around the handle is a one inch indented circle. The dish has a half inch lip and has a 2 ¾ depth. The bowl has a flared edge and is a beautiful strong green color.
The outside has a copper plated colored metal sleeve which sets over the bowl. It reaches the flare and stops. The sleeve has a stencil look with seven areas with two stalks of tigertails and two leaves stenciled in it. The metal sleeve is two tiered so the dish is never resting on the table surface.
Northington Inc was located in Los Angeles and was the brain child of Royce Diener. This company made Lazy Susans, trivets and casserole pieces. They were a trend setter for the trend of metal holders for serving dishes.
The dish has no identification marks on it but I found it in the California Pottery Scrapbook by Jack Chipman. The bowl does have one 1/8 inch chip slice on the edge where the lighter under surface shows and it could be remedied easily by the buyer. This a very stylish dish that would be a conversation piece on any table.
