In Victorian times these small Crystal/Glass Wax Seals carried inscribed greetings and messages or one’s initials. A small dab of hot wax was dropped on an envelope and then the stamp was pressed into the wax to seal it. These seals are becoming rarer to find as people move from one place to another. Here are 3 that have been saved from distinction. The first is shaped somewhat like a chess piece and is smoky clear; sometimes amber color depending upon what light it’s held up to. The piece measures 1 3/8 inch high with cut octagonal form. It is marked on the bottom with the letter ‘W’ for the name Wood. On each side of the ‘W’ is some sort of design or maybe college letters; could be Masonic Marks. Wax Seal has a tiny hole through the top. Since many people used these signet type pieces for their personal signature they carried it on a piece of string or chain so it was always with them. The second seal is six sided and measures ½ inch in diameter and height. Incised on it is: ‘God Bless You.’ The third seal is quite small and carries the name ‘Emily.” I know this name to be Emily Wood, the daughter of Jim and Twink Wood who lived with her parents on the 275 acre Wood family farm, Braewold, in Mt. Kisco/Bedford Hills, NY on Woods Road known to old timers as Jim Woods Bridge Road. I know this because my mother was born and raised in the area and spoke of the bridge telling stories of walking along the dirt road. So when I heard of the estate sale decades later, of course I was anxious to see the inside of the big stone house on the hill that always intrigued me, also having been born and raised in the area. I have listed a box with seals and wax that were also acquired from the Woods estate. Much of the land has since been donated to Haverford College (Jim Woods Alma Mata) in Pennsylvania, as a gift to honor Jim Wood’s father and grandfather. Wax Seals are in good age related condition with no chips. There’s something about the history that is intriguing. Sales tax for all states that require it must be added and is calculated on purchase price including shipping and handling.
