Offered here is a circa 1880s piece of Americana. The hand painted oil on heavy gauge Papier Mache plate measures 12 inches in diameter with scene depicting a man in row boat navigating through some branches into a cove where he appears to be lifting tree branches off a canoe. Colors are very pleasing in taupe and sepia tones. It’s quite nice. The plate is in good to excellent age-related condition with slight wear around the perimeter of the plate. On the back is a faded red manufacturer’s patent dated stamp that reads Patented August 30, 1880. Also you will see tape that someone used to secure a metal hanger. I'm quite certain these plates never had hangers but likely were displayed on plate racks or be framed. I like the later idea as we acquired another Papier Mache plate along with this one and it is beautifully framed in hammered brass. It too is listed on our store. Along with the stamp, there is other writing on the back: in script it looks either like Farm or Germ and then WV/41. This is a great painting and would make a lovely gift for the avid sportsman. Sales tax must be collected for buyers living in or picking up in New York State. Local tax rate applies.
