Offered here is an artist signed nocturnal oil painting on board by H. A. Duessel (Henry A.) 1858-1919. I will describe the painting as a cabin in the woods beside a pond or river bank with vibrant setting sun. What I found uniquely interesting is the artist’s use of the light in the window; so thought out to draw the eye to the cabin. The balance of the colorful flaming sunset and the light in the window is quite calming. The artist extended the painting into the frame giving it more depth and a feel that one can walk right into the scene; the river also flows out into the frame. It is quite nice. The artwork measures 27 ½ inches wide by 13 ½ inches and is nicely framed in what appears to be a Jacobean or other dark stained frame. The frame measures 33 ¼ inches long by 19 ¼ inches high. Width of frame is a touch over 2 ¾ inches. Signature can be found on bottom left corner on frame.
Note on artist: H. A. Duessel is a listed artist. He was German American and lived in Manhattan, NY; his studios were located at 251 Avenue A, 79 Cortland Street, and also in Mt. Vernon, NY. He was known for his Hudson River Style landscapes and marines in a panoramic format, many times carrying the painting onto the frame molding as is seen in the offered painting above. His works were luminescent sunrises and sunsets crouched behind tree branches, shimmering on the earth and water below. This is a wonderful example of his work. At a distance the painting ‘jumps off the wall’. It’s quite impressive. Painting and frame are in exceptionally good age related condition. Other than to secure the old tape on the back and wipe off some dust, it has not been otherwise touched. It is as we found it. Sales tax must be collected for buyers living in or picking up in New York State. Local tax rate applies.
